Before / After

Without /voice

Be more direct.

With /voice

/voice direct, no fluff, slightly impatient, Stack Overflow top-answer energy

What changes in Claude's response

Claude treats this as a system-level instruction for the rest of the chat. Without /voice, asking it to 'be direct' lasts about 2 messages before it slides back into 'Certainly! I'd be happy to help with that.' With /voice, the tone holds for 30+ messages. The descriptors matter — vague ones like 'casual' don't work. Specific ones like 'Stack Overflow top-answer energy' or 'tired senior engineer' actually land.

When NOT to use /voice

Don't stack 5 voice modifiers. 'professional but casual but friendly but technical but warm' averages out to nothing. Pick 2-3 specific qualities max.
